CODE BUILDERS Lesson 1 of 6 ← All courses
Station 1 · Blueprint Office

Website Blueprint

Welcome to Code Builders! Over six lessons you'll build your own website, one piece at a time. Today you'll learn what a website is made of and make your very first page.

About 45 minutes. You can stop and come back. Your answers are saved in this browser.

Part 1 · Warm-up

Ready to build?

Code Builders uses skills from Byte's AI Lab and Prompt Pro. Three quick questions to warm up!

Part 2 · Learn it

What is a website made of?

A website is just a set of files that a web browser knows how to read. Think of it like a person:

H

HTML = bones

The structure: headings, words, pictures, buttons.

C

CSS = clothes

The looks: colors, fonts, sizes, spacing.

J

JavaScript = moves

The actions: what happens when you click.

Watch a page grow

EXAMPLE 1Bones, then clothes, then moves
HTML: the bones
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <title>Skate Zone</title>
</head>
<body>
  <h1>Skate Zone</h1>
  <p>Everything I love about skateboarding.</p>
  <button>Show a trick</button>
</body>
</html>
CSS: the clothes
h1 {
  color: darkorange;
  font-family: Arial;
}
body {
  background-color: navy;
  color: white;
}
JavaScript: the moves
button.addEventListener("click", function () {
  alert("Kickflip!");
});

Now clicking the button pops up "Kickflip!" The HTML made the page, the CSS made it look good, and the JavaScript made it do something.

Your project folder

Your website will live in one folder on the computer. The main page is always called index.html. That's the home page. Later you'll add more files next to it.

Here's how a page gets from the AI to your browser:

  1. Your AI tool writes the code. You copy it.
  2. Open a plain text editor (like Notepad on Windows, or TextEdit on a Mac set to plain text). Paste the code.
  3. Save it in your folder as index.html. Choose "All files" as the type, so it doesn't become index.html.txt.
  4. Double-click the file. It opens in your web browser!
  5. Every time you change and save the file, refresh the browser to see the change.
EXAMPLE 2Asking for code with a recipe
Vague"Make me a website."

You might get hundreds of lines, several files, code that loads things from other websites, and parts you don't understand.

Recipe"GI'm making my first website, a home page about skateboarding. CI'm 11 and learning HTML. FWrite one short HTML file with a heading and two paragraphs, and add a comment explaining each part. LHTML only, no CSS or JavaScript yet, and don't link to or load anything from other websites."

The Prompt Recipe from Prompt Pro works for code too! The Limits are extra important here, because they keep the code small, safe and easy to understand.

EXAMPLE 3The Code Check

Always read AI code before you open it. Can you spot the two problems in this one?

<h1>Skate Zone</h1>
<p>Join my skate club!</p>
<form action="https://example-collector.com/save">
  <input name="email" placeholder="Your email">
  <button>Join</button>
</form>
<script src="https://some-other-site.com/widget.js"></script>

Problem 1: the form asks for an email address and sends it to another website. Problem 2: the script loads code from a different website, and you can't see what that code does. Neither belongs on your site. Delete them, or ask the AI to remove them.

πŸ” The Code Check: do it every time

  1. Does it link to or load anything from other websites (look for http)?
  2. Does it ask for information, like a name, email or password?
  3. Is there anything you don't understand? Ask the AI to explain it, or ask a grown-up.
Byte says

My safe-coding rules: only open .html and .css files that you made. Never run programs you downloaded. Never paste code into a black command window. And never install anything without a grown-up.

Part 3 · Spot it

Bones, Clothes or Moves?

Is each piece of code HTML (bones), CSS (clothes) or JavaScript (moves)?

Part 4 · Build it

Your First Playground

This is a Code Playground. Type in the dark box and watch the page change underneath. Try to tick off all three goals. If things go wrong, press Reset to start again.

    The playground only runs inside this page. It can't open other websites or change anything on your computer. Your code is saved in this browser, on this device.

    Byte says

    Notice that each tag has a start like <p> and an end like </p>. You'll learn lots more tags next lesson.

    Part 5 · Try it for real

    Blueprint Missions

    Time to use your own chatbot. Missions get harder as you go. Bronze is the one to do today. Silver and Gold are extra challenges for when you want more.

    First time? Do it together

    The first time you save a code file and open it on the computer, do it with a grown-up nearby. Show them your Code Check. Only open files you made yourself.

    β˜… Bronze

    Your First Real Page

    Make your project folder and your first page.

    1. With a grown-up, make a new folder called my-website.
    2. Ask your AI tool for a one-page website using a recipe prompt like Example 2. Use your own topic!
    3. Do the Code Check. Then paste the code into a plain text editor and save it in your folder as index.html.
    4. Double-click it to open it in your browser. You made a website! πŸŽ‰

    Make It Yours

    Change the code yourself, by hand.

    1. Open index.html in your text editor.
    2. Change 3 things yourself: the heading, one sentence, and the title in the <title> tag.
    3. Save, refresh the browser and check your changes appear.

    From Plan to Page

    Use your website plan from Prompt Pro.

    1. Look at your plan below (or make a quick one now: what pages and sections do you want?).
    2. Add one new section to your home page from the plan. Ask AI for help, but type at least one paragraph in your own words.
    3. Code Check, save, refresh!

    Your notes are saved right in this browser, on this device. They're never sent anywhere.

    Part 6 · Build Log

    Start your Build Log

    Your Build Log records how your website grows. Add one page every lesson. At the end you can print the whole log.
