Teamwork or Takeover?

Below are 5 examples of how you might work with AI on a story (these are illustrative examples, not a live chat). For each one, decide: is this good teamwork, or did the AI take over?

Notice the pattern? Good teamwork starts with your own idea, uses AI to help with ONE specific part, and ends with you making it your own again.

The idea

Collaborator, not replacement

AI can be a great creative partner — it can suggest words, describe a scene, or brainstorm names. But the story should still be yours. The difference between a good collaborator and a replacement isn't about how much AI you use — it's about who's still driving. If your own ideas, choices, and voice are leading the story, AI is helping. If you're just accepting whatever it hands you without any of your own ideas or changes, it's taken over.

Today you'll combine two tools you've already met: your chatbot (Lesson 3) to help expand a scene, and your image tool (Lesson 6) to illustrate a moment from it. Same tools, same habits — specific prompts, and reviewing everything before you call it done.

There's no wrong amount of help to ask for — the key is that the ideas still feel like yours by the end. If AI suggests something you don't love, you're always allowed to change it or ask for something different.

Before you start

This activity uses both your chatbot and your image tool, so ask a grown-up to be nearby for the whole thing — same reminder as Lessons 3 and 6: think together about what's appropriate to ask for, and review anything AI makes together before you save or share it.

First, jot down your own story idea — a character, a problem, and a setting. This part is all you.

1Open your chatbot app. Pick ONE scene or part of your story and ask it to help you expand or describe that part in more detail.
2Read what it gives you. Keep what fits your story, change what doesn't, and put it in your own words where you can.
3Open your image generation tool with a grown-up nearby. Write a prompt to illustrate one moment from your story — remember from Lesson 6: name a subject, setting, and style.
4Review your illustration with your grown-up before saving or sharing it.
5Put your story and picture together — you've made something that's part you, part AI teamwork!
