BYTE'S AI LAB Lesson 3 of 12
Station 3 · Chat Corner

Meet the Chatbot

Today's the big one — you're going to have your very first real conversation with an AI chatbot!

Try it first

Your first conversation

This activity happens in your own AI chatbot app — not on this page. Open it up, then come back here for each mission below.

Ask a grown-up

Most AI chatbots require you to be 13 or older to have your own account. Ask a grown-up to log in with their account, check over any safety settings together, and stay nearby to co-pilot this activity with you.

Try asking your chatbot

Nice work — that's 5 for 5!

You just ran a real experiment on how chatbots behave. Keep those "notice" moments in mind — you'll build on every one of them in the next few lessons.

The idea

So what exactly IS a chatbot?

A chatbot is AI that's been trained specifically to hold conversations. Like Byte in our Glimmer activity, it learned from a huge pile of training data — except instead of shapes, it studied enormous amounts of text. That's how it learned to generate replies that sound natural.

Here's the key difference from a search engine: a search engine finds and links you to pages that already exist somewhere on the internet. A chatbot doesn't do that — it generates a brand-new response, word by word, based on patterns it learned. That's why it can write you an original poem, or explain the same thing three different ways — nothing like that existed word-for-word before you asked.

Byte says

A few good habits to carry forward: you can always ask a chatbot to explain something differently, keep personal info like your address or full name to yourself, and remember — no matter how friendly it sounds, it's a tool, not a person. You're always allowed to question its answers, too. (More on that in Lesson 5!)
