Show, Don't Just Tell

Sometimes the fastest way to explain what you want is to show it. Today you'll learn how to give the AI an example to copy.

About 40 minutes. You can stop and come back. Your answers are saved in this browser.

Part 1 · Warm-up

What do you remember?

Last time you learned the five ingredients of a prompt recipe. Three quick questions to warm up!

Part 2 · Learn it

Show the AI what you mean

Imagine teaching a friend a new secret handshake. You could describe it in words: "first a high five, then a fist bump, then wiggle your fingers." Or you could just show them. Showing is faster, and they'll get it right.

AI works the same way. Remember Training Camp in Byte's AI Lab? AI learns by spotting patterns in examples. When you put an example inside your prompt, you're giving the AI a tiny training lesson. It looks at your example and copies the pattern.

Byte says

The magic sentence is: "Here's an example. Make more like it." That's called using a template: one example that the AI uses as a pattern.

Watch examples work

EXAMPLE 1Riddles
No example"Write 3 riddles."

The AI might write long, complicated riddles, or riddles with no answers.

With an example"Here's a riddle I like: EXWhat has keys but can't open locks? A piano! Write 3 more riddles like this: one short question, then the answer."

Now the AI knows the length, the style and that every riddle needs an answer.

EXAMPLE 2Flashcards
With an example"Here's an example flashcard:
EXWORD: enormous | MEANING: very, very big | SENTENCE: The enormous whale swam past our boat.
Make 5 more flashcards in the same layout for these words: tiny, ancient, swift, fragile, gigantic."
AIWORD: tiny | MEANING: very, very small | SENTENCE: The tiny ant carried a crumb.
WORD: ancient | MEANING: very, very old | SENTENCE: We visited an ancient castle.
…

Every card comes back in exactly the same layout. That's the pattern being copied.

EXAMPLE 3Quiz questions
With an example"Make 4 quiz questions about the ocean. Use this layout:
EXQ: What is the largest ocean? A) Atlantic B) Pacific C) Indian — Answer: B"

Without the example, the AI might give questions with no choices, or hide all the answers at the end. With it, you get exactly the layout you want.

EXAMPLE 4Careful: bad examples get copied too!
Messy example"Here's a fun fact: EXOCTOPUSES HAVE 3 HEARTS!!!!! SO COOL!!!!! Give me 5 more fun facts like this."
AISLOTHS CAN HOLD THEIR BREATH FOR 40 MINUTES!!!!! AMAZING!!!!!
…

The AI copied the shouting! It copies everything in your example: the good parts and the messy parts. If your example has a mistake, the AI may copy the mistake too.

Byte says

Two tips from me. First, say what to copy and what to change: "Copy the layout, but use different animals." Second, if you give two examples, make them a bit different. That shows the AI which parts are allowed to change.

Part 3 · Spot it

Which example made this?

Each answer below came from a prompt with an example in it. Look closely at the pattern, then pick the example that was used.

Part 4 · Build it

Pattern Maker

Let's make a flashcard set. You write one example card. Then the prompt asks the AI to make more just like it. Fill in at least 3 boxes, then compare with Byte's version.

Example Missions

Time to use your own chatbot. Missions get harder as you go. Bronze is the one to do today. Silver and Gold are extra challenges for when you want more.

★ Bronze

Joke Copycat

Find out how much difference one example makes.

  1. Ask your chatbot: "Tell me 3 jokes."
  2. Now give it one clean joke you like as an example, and ask for 3 more in the same style.
  3. Compare. Which jokes are closer to your sense of humor?
★★ SilverExtra challenge

Flashcard Factory

Use your Pattern Maker prompt for real.

  1. Copy your prompt from the Pattern Maker, or write a new one about something you want to remember.
  2. Read every card the AI makes. Check each one is correct. AI can make mistakes!
  3. If the layout went wrong, ask: "Use exactly the same layout as my example."
★★★ GoldExtra challenge

Quiz Designer

Design your own quiz layout and test it on someone.

  1. Write one example question in a layout you invent (with choices and an answer).
  2. Ask for 5 more questions in that layout about a topic you know really well.
  3. Check every answer yourself and fix any that are wrong. Then try the quiz on a friend or someone at home!
