Station 4 · Role-Play Stage

Roles and Voices

An AI can play a part: a quiz master, a patient tutor, even a pirate. Today you'll learn how to give it a role, and how to stay safe while you do.

About 40 minutes. You can stop and come back. Your answers are saved in this browser.

Part 1 · Warm-up

What do you remember?

Last time you learned to talk back with follow-ups. Quick warm-up!

Part 2 · Learn it

Give the AI a part to play

In a school play, the same person can be a king one day and a dragon the next. Their voice and the way they talk change with the part.

You can give an AI a part too. This is called giving it a role. You start with "You are a…" or "Act as a…". You can also choose a tone: how it should sound, like friendly, excited, calm or funny.

R

Role

Who the AI acts as: "You are a quiz master."

T

Tone

How it sounds: "Be friendly and encouraging."

!

Rules

How it behaves: "Ask one question at a time."

Watch roles work

EXAMPLE 1One fact, three voices
The prompt"Tell me that octopuses have three hearts. Say it three times: as a scientist, as a pirate and as a sports commentator."
AIScientist: An octopus has three hearts. Two pump blood to the gills, and one pumps it around the body.
Pirate: Arr! Three hearts beat in the chest of the mighty octopus, matey!
Sports commentator: AND THE OCTOPUS STEPS UP WITH NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT THREE HEARTS! WHAT A PLAYER!

Same fact, totally different feel. A role changes the style, and sometimes how much detail you get.

EXAMPLE 2A quiz master for revision
YouYou are a friendly quiz master. Ask me 5 questions about the solar system, one at a time. Wait for my answer, then tell me if I'm right and explain in one sentence.
AIQuestion 1: Which planet is closest to the Sun?
YouMercury?
AICorrect! 🎉 Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Question 2: Which planet is famous for its rings?

The rule "one at a time, wait for my answer" turns the AI into a practice partner, not an answer machine.

EXAMPLE 3A tutor that gives hints, not answers
YouYou are a patient tutor. I'm stuck on this puzzle: "A farmer has some chickens and cows. Together they have 10 heads and 28 legs. How many cows are there?" Don't tell me the answer. Give me one small hint at a time.
AIGood puzzle! Hint 1: Every animal has one head. So how many animals are there altogether?
You10 animals.
AIYes! Hint 2: If all 10 were chickens, how many legs would there be?

This is a brilliant way to learn. You do the thinking, and the AI just nudges you. It's also an honest way to get help with schoolwork.

Byte says

Important: a character is still just the AI. It isn't a real pirate, a real teacher or a real friend, even if it sounds friendly. So all the safety rules still apply. Never share personal details with a character. Don't ask it to pretend to be a real person you know. And if a chat ever feels weird or uncomfortable, stop and tell a grown-up.

Part 3 · Spot it

Who's Talking?

Read each answer and work out which role made it.

Great listening! 🎭

Part 4 · Build it

Tone Shifter

Build a role prompt. Choose a role and a tone, then pick a topic you'd like explained or practiced. Fill in at least 3 boxes, then compare with Byte's version.

Part 5 · Try it for real

Role-Play Missions

Time to use your own chatbot. Missions get harder as you go. Bronze is the one to do today. Silver and Gold are extra challenges for when you want more.

Let a grown-up know

Role-play chats can feel very real and personal. Tell a grown-up you're doing these missions. Keep personal details out of every chat, and stop and get help if anything feels uncomfortable.

★ Bronze

Two Voices

Hear how much a role changes an answer.

  1. Pick one fact you know, like "Honey never goes bad."
  2. Ask your chatbot to tell it as a scientist, then as a character of your choice (a pirate, a robot, a news reporter…).
  3. Compare. Which one would help you remember the fact?
★★ SilverExtra challenge

Quiz Master

Turn the AI into a practice partner.

  1. Choose a topic you're learning about or just love.
  2. Ask: "You are a friendly quiz master. Ask me 5 questions about [topic], one at a time. Wait for my answer, then tell me if I'm right."
  3. Answer all 5. If an explanation looks wrong, check it somewhere trusted.
★★★ GoldExtra challenge

Hint-Only Tutor

Get help without being handed the answer.

  1. Find a puzzle or problem you're stuck on (a riddle, a brain teaser or a tricky question).
  2. Set up a tutor: "Don't tell me the answer. Give me one small hint at a time."
  3. Solve it yourself! If it gives away the answer, remind it: "Only hints, please."

Part 6 · Prompt Playbook

Add a page to your Playbook

Save your best role prompt. The quiz master and hint-only tutor prompts are great for revision!
